Every mold consists of two plates called Mold Core Insert and cavity plate. The cavity plate contains the cavity that shapes the outside form of the molding, while the core projects from the Mold Core Insert plate to form the inside shape. When the mold closes, these two plates come together, creating the impression space between cavity and core.

As the molding cools, it shrinks onto the core and remains with it when the mold opens. This occurs regardless of whether the Mold Core Insert is in the fixed half or moving half. The shrinkage onto the core necessitates an ejector system, which is easily provided when the Mold Core Insert is in the moving half.
