Their widespread practical use became possible when thread standards were established in 1864, enabling interchangeability that supported the rapid growth of the machine age. Before plastics gained widespread acceptance in the 1940s, metal was the primary material for mechanical products. Between the 1860s and 1940s, the machine tool industry perfected thread design, with comprehensive technical information published in references like Machinery's Handbook. Interestingly, this extensive reference contains no mention of plastic materials in its coverage of thread design. The plastics industry has not produced comparable technical information for injection molded threads, as early plastics engineers typically designed threads that duplicated metal thread specifications. While many performed satisfactorily, others failed unexpectedly due to limitations in early materials and molding procedures compared to today's high-performance engineering materials and advanced molding techniques.
